Where To Look

Dragonflies can be found in a variety of wetland habitats, lakes, ponds, streams to name a few. Some species tend to be habitat specific, in seeps, bogs and fens or streams, but others are found in a variety of habitats. Some larvae even mature in puddles!

While maturing, dragonflies are often found far from water. In a behavior called "hilltopping" they make their first flight up and away from the water and spend days or even weeks hanging out, feeding and maturing. They aren't always on the tops of hills, but could be in weedy fields, along power line cuts, or, especially on windy days, in the shelter of an edge or hedgerow.

There's a description of various types of habitats over in the conservation section, click here to take a look. The more you know about each species, the better your chances of finding them, so also check out our family guide.
