Tropical Dashers

genus: Micrathyria

Tropical Dashers

micrathyria-1.jpgThree species are found in North America. These small dashers have blue or blue-green eyes and a white nose with frons dark metallic blue; the thorax and abdomen are black with yellow-green stripes or spots. The abdomen is very thin with two yellow spots on segment 7.

Females appear paler than their male counterparts and have a somewhat thicker abdomen. In some species individuals undergo a radical color change with age.

Males can be found perched on branch tips. They are territorial and very aggressive, chasing neighboring dragonflies out of their territory.

These dashers inhabit ponds, lakes, canals, swamps, ditches and ponds.
