Pondhawks

Pondhawks

genus: Erythemis

Pondhawks

Common, medium size dragonflies;   The abdomens are long and slender.   Wings are clear, although some species may present with a brown amber wash at the base.  Legs are generally black with long black spines on them.

Coloration changes from juvenile, mature adult and old age are remarkably substantial.

Females in most species are different in coloration from the males.

The species in this genus are voracious predators, they often eat other dragonflies, sometimes as large as themselves.

The members of this genus can usually be found resting on the ground, or on floating logs or debris around lakes and ponds.
