Also known as robust threadtails. These are
small damselflies with a thick body. This genus is sometimes
confused with the coenagrionids (pond damsels) in particular the
enallagma genus because of their size and thoracic colorations.
Males are generally brightly colored mostly in combinations of black,
yellow and oranges. Females are generally duller than their male
counterparts and shorter bodied than the protoneuras genus.
Tandem pairs can be observed hovering over slow
moving water but also may be found far from shorelines perched on tree
leaves. Ovipositing is generally done on top of floating wood
plants stems, logs, almost anything laying in the middle of the water.
While ovispositing the male is supported by the female.
Larvae occur mostly in lotic waters, and have been
observed clinging to stones in streams. Others have been seen in
vegetation or coarse detritus in pools. |
