Painted Damsel - Hesperagrion

hesperagrion.jpgThis genus consists of one species in North America. The thorax on the mature male is blue laterally becoming a cream or pale greenish-yellow ventrally. The abdomen is of a blue-green coloration dorsally and a yellowish ventrally with bright orange terminal appendages. The wings are clear. The eyes are black dorsally and blue and green ventrally with bright red postocular spots. According to Dennis Paulison this specie shows a dramatic color change with age and cannot be mistaken for any other damselfly in North America.  It is unique in appearance.

The females coloration is similar to that of the mature male but somewhat paler. Eyes are a light brown dorsally and green ventrally with blue postocular spots.

These beauties can be found in slow-moving streams and ditches with much surrounding vegetation.
