Gray Petaltail

This large darner-like dragonfly is mostly gray in coloration. The eyes are gray and widely separated. The thorax is gray with pale markings on the sides.  The abdomen is patterned with dark bands and triangles with a dark tip. Wings are hyaline with long narrow stigmas.

Females look similar to the males with their widely separated eyes, large size and grayish coloration.

Petaltails can generally be found perched vertically on tree trunks, ocassionaly on the ground. Some have been even known to land on people, as this webmaster can contest to.  If not perched on trees, they can usually be found patrolling low over seepages.
