Boghaunters

genus: Williamsonia

Boghaunters

This is a genus of two rare, small blackish or brownish dragonflies that are without or have little metallic coloration except on top of the head in mature males.  The thorax is brown, Abdomen is black or brown with broken rings of yellow across the middle segments.  The under-parts and appendages are blackish. The wings are hyaline. Legs are black with pales areas at the base,

Boghaunters can be found perched on tree trunks or on the ground around acid bogs, fens and wetlands dominated by sphagnum.   They are rare and due to their habitats generally hard to find.  They are docile and one can approach them easily, they have even been known to land on observers.

Mating occurs in woodland areas. Oviposition occurs in open, sedge dominated wetlands, where the females deposit their eggs in mats of sphagnum.
