Sundragons

genus: Helocordulia

Sundragons

Two species are found in North America, these are small dragonflies with a dark brown body. The male abdomen is dark with yellow spots and slightly clubbed, the cerci has a lateral medial tooth.  Females sub-genital plate orange.  Yellow face, with pale green eyes.   Wings have a brown or amber spot at the base.

The two species are almost identical except for a small amber spot next to the brown spot at each wing base.

Sundragons can be found cruising along sandy bottomed streams and rivers in forests, as well as flying in open areas. They generally perch on at oblique angles on stems of grass or other vegetation. They are closely related to Baskettails but differ in coloration and wing venation.
