Common Emeralds

There is only one North American species in this genus. These medium dragonflies are brown with metallic green flashes on a hairy thorax. The abdomen is black, with a thin yellow ring near the base and brown spots on the first three segments, it is slender and slightly expanded at the end.  The wings are unmarked.  Upon maturity the eyes are of emerald green color.

Females abdomen is more cylindrical.  Cross-vein in forewing has a triangle.  Eyes are emerald green.

Males can be seen patrolling along edges of boggy ponds, fens, sedge marshes, lakes and slow streams.
