Only one species occurs in North America. These Darners
are medium in size and
are closely related to two-spined darners. The thorax is
green with brown stripes on the top or on the sides. The
abdomen is narrowed at segment three and brown with small
green spots or rings. Eyes are large and green, wings broad
and tinted yellow.
Females are our only darners which have
three small spines pointing downward under the last
abdominal segment otherwise both sexes appear similar.
They often can be found hanging from branches in forest
areas during the day, but become active during dusk flying
low over forest pools.
