Cyrano Darner

genus Nasiaeschna

Cyrano Darner

One species is classified in this genus. Large in size, this dragonfly has a robust brown thorax with two thick green jagged lateral stripes,  The abdomen is brown and tapers from base to tip in males with pale green or blue markings located dorsally and laterally.  The head is patterned in gray and blue with bulging bright blue eyes and a prominent pale blue "nose".

Females are similar to males in appearance but abdomen appears thicker.  Females will oviposit in logs and submerged vegetation.

These Darners can be seen patrolling slowly above streams, swamps and ponds in early morning hours.  They have a unique flight pattern which is zigzagging back and forth and very seldom seen hovering.  The Cyrano prefers feeding in or near woods instead of open fields like most other Darners and is almost never seen flying in swarms.
