Two-spined Darners - Gynacantha
These
are large tropical Darners. In most species the body is brown,
some reddish with blue or green markings. Both sexes look similar in
appearance except Females of this genus have a large ovipositor and two
small spines pointing downwards under the last segment.
Many species in this tropical genus are known for flying at short
periods at dawn and dusk, when their own species and others of the genus
Tricanthagyna can be seen in large numbers swarming for food or mating.
This genus has an erratic and extremely fast flight.
They are usually found in woodland areas around grassy and temporary
ponds where they may lurk in shady thickets and tangles, But have
been known to wander in open areas close to buildings. Two species are
currently known from the southern U.S., one in Florida and one in Texas.
