genus: Gomphaeschna
Pygmy Darners
This subgroup consists of two of the smallest darners known in North
America. Both reside in the Eastern United States. The thorax is
of heavily patterned with pale markings. These darners are Club-tail
like.
These Darners can be found feeding or flying along forest edges, shallow
pools, sphagnum bogs or digs.
Males seem to swarm together with only a few females. They travel long
distances on long wing beats at any heights.
Pygmy Darners generally perch on tree trunks, or sometimes hang from
under branches, rarely do they perch on the ground or grass stems. One
specie of the genus Harlequin Darner (Gomphaeschna furcillata) has been
noted to land on people while standing or walking through forested areas.
This makes for some good entertainment
