Swamp Darner

Swamp Darner

genus: Epiaeschna

Swamp Darner

This genus contains one of our largest dragonflies. It is a widespread darner found all across the Eastern United States.  It is of dark brown coloration with broad green dorsal and lateral thoracic stripes.  The abdomen is dark brown with narrow paired green rings and patches on the sides.  The wings may be tinted pale yellow or amber.  It's bright blue eyes are quite prominent and can be seen from afar.  The Swamp Darner is our only brown darner that displays green abdominal rings.

Females are similar to males in appearance

These darners have a strong fast flight.  The Swamp Darner is a shade-loving bug which inhabits woodland ponds and slow streams. In the evening hours they can be observed in feeding swarms over woodland areas and appear as little airplanes in the skies. They can often be observed hanging up in the shade of tree branches.

Unlike most darners, males do not usually patrol over water.
