Pilot Darners
These are large Neotropical darners with four species native
to North America. Mature males present with a mostly
green thorax with a dark brown line on the dorsal and two
dark brown lines on the lateral sides. The abdomen is long
and black showing green markings such as lines and rings in
most species. Legs are short. Males have simple
appendages, while the female long cerci appears broken off. Juveniles
have green eyes, which turn blue in the base and transparent
beyond.

Pilot Darners can be observed flying very low over the
waters surface, and at other times flying at tree-top level
in open marshes or forests.
