River Cruisers

River Cruisers

genus: Macromia

River Cruisers

This genus is nearly world wide, with nine species occurring in North America. The thorax is generally dark in coloration, most species will have a single lateral thoracic stripe making them stand out from darners and spiketails.  The markings on the front thorax vary as do the yellow markings on the abdomen.  Their wings are usually clear, but may have an amber wash to them. Eyes are large, metallic green in most speceies and meet broadly along a seam.  Legs are black.

These dragonflies have a swift flight and can usually be seen flying rapidly over rivers, streams and some occasionally lakes. When not flying, they generally perch vertically or obliquely from branches.

These genus has been known to hybridize making identification a challenge.
