Grappletail

genus: Octogomphus

Grappletail

One species occurs in this genus.  Grappletails are large sized dragonflies with a yellow to pale green thorax displaying wide black shoulder stripes. The abdomen is very thin almost all black and widest at the tip with a yellow cerci.  The wings are clear with black stigmas and the hind-wing appears wide.  This genus is closely related to the genus Lanthus and Stylogomphus.

Females are quite similar to males, but have a thin yellow line on their dorsal abdomen and slightly thicker clubs.

Males can generally be found perched flat on rocks, twigs or leaves around mountain streams and rivers with riffles in woodland areas.
