Dragonhunter

Dragonhunter

genus: Hagenius

Dragonhunter

Only one species is classified in this genus.  It is mostly black in coloration with two yellow lateral thoracic stripes. The head is small in proportion to the body. The eyes are bright green and the face is yellow.  Its legs are long and black in color; wings long and narrow. These clubtails have a poorly defined club.Females are colored much like the male but with more yellow on the lateral thorax and abdomen. It is the largest clubtail. Often feeds on other dragonflies, sometimes almost as big as itself.

These large dragonflies can be seen perched hanging down from branches over water or perched on the ground.  They are commonly seen patrolling up and down streams and rivers, often in wooded areas, occasionally open lakes. When flying their abdomen is a bit elevated with the tip curled down making identification easier.
